Penile PRP Injection

As men age, one of the common conditions that starts to appear is poor erections. It is estimated that about 30 million men in the US have some form of erectile dysfunction (ED), with about 25% of those starting around the age of 40.  ED can be the result of numerous underlying conditions, which can be grouped into 4 main categories:

  1. Cardiometabolic = the most common, which can create blood flow issues (vascular disease)*
  2. Neurological = usually due to nerve issues from the back or around the prostate. Back and prostate surgery are common culprits.
  3. Psychological = stress, anxiety, depression can all affect and worsen erectile function.
  4. Medications = there are several medications that affect erections, notably the SSRIs.

* If signs of ED are present, a heart disease check should be done, to rule out or design a treatment plan for underlying conditions.   Diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or atherosclerosis are all risk factors that can lead to ED.

Viagra or Cialis are frequently used to treat ED, but are typically taken prior to each incidence of sexual activity and may have side effects for some patients. The penile PRP injection provides an alternative treatment to medication.  The effects of initial injections may last 12 months or longer in many patients.

A PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injection is a simple and quick procedure.  Plasma is extracted from the patient’s own blood, and processed in a manner that concentrates certain protein components that help with cellular repair and regeneration.  The resulting fluid is then prepared as a localized injection, to concentrate healing benefits in the area of concern. These injections are used for various health concerns including joint pain, soft tissue injuries, aesthetics, and sexual health.  Side effects are minimal, as the substance being injected is taken from the patient’s own blood.

Benefits of the penile PRP injection include:

  • Stronger, firmer erections
  • Maintain erections for longer period of time
  • Increase in sensitivity of the penis
  • Potential of increase in length and/or girth of the penis
  • Better blood flow to the penis.

The procedure generally takes 30 to 45 minutes, and includes a blood draw, numbing the penis with a topical anesthetic cream, and the injection.  The procedure is painless, but some patients may feel a slight sensation of pressure.   There is very little downtime; sexual activity may resume within 24 hours.  A vacuum erection device will also be provided to use at home, to help achieve optimal performance from the procedure.  Penile PRP may also be used in conjunction with other ED treatments such as shockwave therapy.
